The Red Light District in Amsterdam is famous for the many Amsterdam girls behind red lid windows. These window brothels are unique for Amsterdam and many visitors look in amazement at the many beautiful girls.

Because of the tolerant attitude towards prostitution (it's legal), girls from many countries are working here.

Some girls prefer to work as a escort. And although the Red Light District is a more safe environment for the girls as well as the clients, working for an escort service offers more anonymity.

This is Amsterdam Red Light District. Pictures of girls and "window shopping" in the red light area give you an idea why so many people visit this oldest part of Amsterdam.

Tourist authorities acknowledge the 700-year-old red-light district -- a maze of narrow alleys and canals lined with shops, girls and marijuana-selling "coffee shops" -- is as much of a draw as other attractions such as the Van Gogh museum or the Anne Frank House.

Every night visitors throng the streets, looking at women sitting behind huge red-lit windows, and who sell their services for as little as €50. Amsterdam Red Light District prices are low compared to most other western cities.

If you want to take pictures yourself in this area, be very careful. You will see "No Photos" stickers everywhere and most girls hate to be photographed. If you get caught by them, verbal abuse is the least you can expect and you won't be the first person whose camera ends up in one of the canals.

Red Light District Information Center

The Red Light District is a major tourist attraction and many visitors are curious to know what goes on behind the closed curtains. So an information center was set up to inform people about the "business". The people at the prostitution information center have extensive knowledge about the area and everything concerning prostitution. They are able to answer all you questions and you don't have to be shy to ask.

For people who rather look at it from a distance, this information center offers a peek into a room, used by the prostitutes with an explanation of how they work, how much it cost etc.

This center is operated by volunteers and their costs are covered by donations from visitors. The Prostitution Information Center also offers a one-and-a-half hour program for groups (€7,50 pp) where all your questions will be answered. And in the shop you can find art from local artists and other items with the Red Light District as a common denominator.
